Inside Line Promotions – MECHANICSBURG, Pa. (Oct. 26, 2022) – Big Game Motorsports driver David Gravel recorded his 40th total top-five finish of the season last Saturday during the Champion Racing Oil National Open.
Even more significant, Gravel’s top five combined with a DNF for the World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series points leader has allowed Gravel to close to 16 points in the championship standings entering the final event of the season.
“We have a legitimate shot,” he said. “This year we have three races at The Dirt Track at Charlotte instead of two. The 16 points is eight positions so we have to beat him by three spots a night. That’s something that is doable.”
Last Saturday was an efficient night for Gravel, who qualified sixth quickest. He rebounded after dropping to fourth early in a heat race to pass a pair of drivers, securing a runner-up result and a spot in the dash. Gravel rallied from sixth to third in the dash to garner the third starting position in the 40-lap main event.
“We qualified okay and started third in our heat race,” he said. “I didn’t get a good start off the bottom and fell to fourth, but we had a good race car. I was able to pass Donny (Schatz) for third. We had a restart and I was able to get second to get in the dash, which was really, really good.
“In the dash I was able to get a good start. I think we were fourth off turn two and we were able to pass (Spencer) Bayston for third. I felt really good and confident there.”
Gravel battled in third for most of the feature before dropping a trio of positions following a late-race restart. He regained fifth place in the closing laps for his World of Outlaws leading 39th top five of the season.
“We had a good car for the first 25 laps,” he said. “We had the red flag with 15 laps to go. For whatever reason the car didn’t fire off after that. We didn’t change anything on the race car, but I felt like I had a different race car and it took us out of contention.”
The team takes this weekend off before wrapping up the 2022 campaign Nov. 2-5 at The Dirt Track at Charlotte in Concord, N.C., during the World of Outlaws World Finals.
