Inside Line Promotions – HAUBSTADT, Ind. (April 27, 2022) – David Gravel has had this weekend circled on the calendar since the 2022 World of Outlaws NOS Energy Drink Sprint Car Series schedule was released.
Bristol Motor Speedway in Bristol, Tenn., hosts the World of Outlaws Bristol Bash on Friday and Saturday. It’s an event that Gravel swept last year, winning both the preliminary night and the $25,000-to-win finale.
“I’m definitely very excited to come back,” he said. “It’s a prestigious place with more money on the line this year. We were very fast last year. It was kind of a perfect weekend with dash draws and all of those things. This year we’ll try to put ourselves in the same position and contend for a couple of wins.”
The Big Game Motorsports driver was the one to beat last year as he set quick time the opening night and was second quickest during the finale. Gravel won his heat race both nights. He claimed the dash the first night and finished second the second night. And both A Mains ended with Gravel driving into Victory Lane.
“I wouldn’t say added pressure, but I would say confidence,” he said. “The second night we fell back to third at one point and had to fight and battle and only led a couple of laps. I think there’s a lot of fast guys. Our car had a lot of speed, but other people did as well. Hopefully we’ll unload with a lot of speed and put ourselves in the dash both nights.”
Gravel is coming off his 12th top-10 outing of the season last Saturday at Tri-State Speedway, where he qualified third quickest, placed third in a heat race and advanced from ninth to sixth in the main event.
“It would have been good to get another shot at the race track by being in the dash,” he said. “I think we had a decent car in the feature and I felt we were competitive. I think if we started up there we could have competed, but we weren’t stellar enough to really charge forward and make a lot of big moves. At the line I lost fifth place by two hundredths of a second. Best case scenario was to run fifth and we finished sixth.”
Friday’s event at Tri-City Speedway in Granite City, Ill., rained out, marking the fourth straight weekend with a rainout on Friday for the World of Outlaws.
