STAR SPANGLED SUCCESS: Swindell Grabs Back-to-Back Wins at Knoxville
A trio of podium finishes propel Gravel to Cedar Lake Speedway and big weekend
CARLISLE, PA. – July 6, 2016 – CJB Motorsports continues to make headlines across the sprint car racing world as America celebrates its annual Independence Day.
The Pennsylvania based team has been hotter than a stash of firecrackers for the past five weeks and has not cooled down since.
David Gravel and the #5 team saddled up for an epic show as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series visited Rockford Speedway near Loves Park, Ill. The track, famous for pavement racing, was covered in clay for the Outlaw Clay Classic.
Gravel timed in well and started off his night with a strong showing in his heat race.
“I had a shot,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “When you enter the corner high and chop down low, you get a really good run down the straightaway and I just tried to poke my nose. Just happy to finish second. We almsot had another win out of that race.”
A westward trip across Iowa was next as the #5 team set their sights on an Independence Day weekend at Badlands Motor Speedway near Brandon, S.D.
“We didn’t get in the dash like we wanted to so to finish on the podium is great,” commented Gravel, who has climbed from up to fourth in the series points standings. “We had a really good car there in the middle of the race. We faded a little bit late but Brad and Joey had really good cars. We probably had a third or fourth place car but with Jason blowing a tire that put us third. We’re really happy with third.”
The following night, Gravel was back in action and the speedy bullring.
“We had a really, really good car there late in the race,” said Gravel. “I just wish we didn’t have a caution. It seemed like, this weekend, every time we had a caution, the tires aren’t the same after that. We’ll try to figure that part out. We were really, really good in that long green flag run. I thought we had something for those guys but we’re happy with another podium.”
Sammy Swindell got the party started on the fourth of July weekend for CJB by recording his second straight win at Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway on Friday, July 1st.
“We started off with a new engine that we wanted to get some notes on,” Swindell, who now has 50 career wins at Knoxville. “We weren’t too good in hot laps and went a little backwards in the time trials but we found something for the heat race and we got to going pretty good there. The NSL’s format helped us a bit and where we timed in, with the invert, we ended up in a great spot for the heat race and then the feature. We had a ton of restarts in that feature and some green, white, checkers, but we were able to pull away from everyone each time. I could roll the bottom pretty good, especially, in (turns) three & four and that led to some really good laps. I’m really proud of my guys and this team. They’ve been great all year long. We added some notes and I think we’ll be really good from here on out.”
Mother nature washed away the second night of action at Knoxville for the weekend.
July marches on for the CJB tandem as Gravel and the #5 team head for Cedar Lake Speedway.
“Cedar Lake is a really fun track,” said Gravel, who will race at the New Richmond, Wis. track on Friday, July 8th and Saturday, July 9th. “Two day shows are nice because you don’t have all the travel over night and what not. I think we’ll continue to be good and I’m just really proud of my team for how they keep bringing an excellent car to the track every night. It’s just awesome.”
Swindell will make preparations to come east for the annual Kings Royal at Eldora Speedway, July 14th thru 16th.
“The Kings Royal is a cool event but its tough because of the format,” said Swindell. “It’s very unique and you have to have some luck. I’m looking forward to making the trip with this team and mixing it up. I think we’re as good as we were when we went there last year. Kings Royal was my first ride with CJB and we had a very strong run. We’re looking to duplicate that here.”
