DANCING WITH THE DEVIL: CJB Grabs Strong Finishes at Texas Outlaw Nationals

Mid-south racing up next for Gravel & Swindell as Outlaws continue eastward
CARLISLE, PA. – April 26, 2016 – The phrase ‘Everything is bigger in Texas,’ certainly covers a wide spectrum of topics. As it pertains to World of Outlaw Craftsman Spring Car Racing, the level of competition as the tour entered Devils Bowl Speedway certainly matched the billing of the Lone Star state.
A two-night tango was on tap for the ‘Greatest Show on Dirt.’ CJB Motorsports drivers David Gravel and Sammy Swindell were both in action at the high-banked half-mile track located outside of Mesquite, Texas.
“We didn’t qualify where we wanted to on Friday night,” said Gravel, driver of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “We ran well in our heat which helped us out. We fell back in the A-main but got lucky on some restarts. That helped us get closer to the front and scored a good finish.”
Gravel & his #5 team used their notes to improve upon their result from Friday night. Saturday nights feature paid $20,000 to the winner.
“We timed in right where we wanted to on Saturday,” said Gravel, who now has nine top5’s so far in 2016. “We needed a better draw in the dash to help us out and we were kind of where we were at. Track position was king and we had it.”
For veteran Sammy Swindell, the season long R&D project continued at Devils Bowl as the #1 team continued to test out new ideas, which led to excellent results.
“We made some changes to our overall setup and the car agreed with them,” said Swindell, who owns 12 Outlaw victories at the track. “We struggled just a little bit in time trials. Our car was pretty good in the feature except we had an issue and the left rear tire built up more pressure than it needed to. That affected us a little bit but our car drove forward really well.”
Like Gravel’s #5 team, Swindell and his team returned for Saturday night’s portion of the weekend with fresh ideas and speed.
“We should have been a bit better on Saturday,” said Swindell, who now has seven top-10’s on the year. “I made an error getting into turn one in time trials. That set us back for the night and we barely missed the dash. In the feature, the faster lane was up high so it was a little hard to make up ground at times. We ended up with a flat left front so we had to get that taken care of and then had to make our way back through the field. To finish 9th felt good, after that. It was kind of fun to do that. Our time is coming.”
Texas now becomes a memory as the series rolls east for a Tuesday night date at I-30 Speedway near Little Rock, Ark. It will be the first time in over 20 years that the series has visited the track, known affectionately as “The Ditch.”
“I-30 is a short, action packed track,” said Gravel, who competed in the tracks Short Track Nationals in 2010 & 2013. “Haven’t been there in a few years so I am looking forward to getting back. I’m looking to improve.”
“I-30 is really one of the tracks I got started racing on,” said Swindell, a three-time Short Track Nationals champion. “It’s been fun to go to over the years. It’s got some long straights and tight turns so it’s fun from a driver’s perspective. I will have some family & friends down so it’ll be fun.”
From there, the “I-44 Series,” is in full swing as stops at the Salina High Banks Speedway (Friday, April 29th) and Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 (Saturday, April 30th) populate the weekend.
“Salina & Pevely are two very fun tracks for us,” said Gravel. “We should have great speed at both.”
“Both tracks are pretty fast for their size,” said Swindell. “Always been unique and fun. Both are places where you really have to pay attention because things happen so fast.”
