Five nights at Volusia Speedway Park kick off the third season for the pairing
CARLISLE, PA. – January 30, 2018 – In a little over a week, the chase for the 2018 World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series title begins.
The tour, among the most challenging and grueling in any form of motorsports, is world renown for its toughness and competitiveness. Few drivers have written their names into the history books as a champion of the series. David Gravel hopes to add his in the new season. Armed with the ever fast CJB Motorsports team, the Watertown, Conn. native is anxious to begin the campaign.
“We finished up last year pretty strong,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “We had really good speed and contended in many of the places we ran.”
Gravel returns to the team for his third season. In 2017, car #5 found victory lane 20 times in all with 18 of those being on the Outlaw circuit. A perfect showing in his qualifying night at the annual 5 Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals was yet another demonstration of the speed Gravel and crew chief Barry Jackson had in their #5 machine.
“One of our goals for the season is a bit of redemption at Knoxville,” said Gravel. “We really want to go back there and finish the thing off. Other than that, we really just want to continue to win races and hopefully that will lead us to the Outlaws championship. We came close last year. It’s another one of those deals where we want to close it out, and I think we can.”
For 2018, the team returns all key personnel (Gravel, Jackson and crewmembers Derek Miller and Zach Holloway) and is pleased to welcome Weikerts Livestock to the valued partners list that includes GoMuddy.com, Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc. and many more.
“It’s really huge to have all of us back together,” said Gravel. “I think it will get back in to our rhythm quicker than some of the teams that may be bringing new guys in or are all new. It’s also really cool to have Bob Weikert and his company join our team. They are big sprint car fans and one of my favorite cars growing up was the Weikerts #29. To have them with GoMuddy.com together is really special. We are all very thankful that Tod Quiring and his team saw the value in our team and we look forward to continuing to deliver results for them. A lot of race fans are also hunters as well so it’s a perfect combination.”
Before the Outlaw season official kicks off, the team will contest two nights of racing with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil One at Volusia Speedway Park near Barberville, Fl. Those events, scheduled to run Wednesday, Feb. 7th and Thursday, Feb. 8th, serve as a prelude to a three-night Outlaw kickoff. Gravel and the CJB crew are no strangers to success in the event known as the “DIRTcar Nationals,” having won the overall points championship for the weekend in 2017.
“Volusia is probably the fastest track we go to,” said Gravel. “It’s a wake-up moment because you go from no racing to the fastest place we go. Over five nights, the surface can change a lot. Some nights it’ll be really wet and heavy. Others it will dry and dusty. It’s quite a challenge. It’s also a unique track in that the back stretch is also like a big turn as well. We’re up for the challenge and are ready to get our season started.”
