PEVELY POWER FORWARD: Gravel Contends for Win in Dual Ironman 55’s at Pevely

August 8th, 2018

5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals are up next for a team looking for redemption

CARLISLE, PA. – August 7, 2018 – Few things could be better than dual, $20,000-to-win events at one of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series most exciting facilities.

Such a two step awaited the CJB Motorsports team and driver David Gravel as they ventured to Federated Auto Parts Raceway at I-55 near Pevely, MO on Friday, August 3rd and Saturday, August 4th for the Ironman 55 weekend double. Last years event, which is comprised of 55 laps around one of the most demanding tracks on the circuit, was delayed to this year by rain.

On Friday night, the team timed in 7th quick, charged to 2nd in their heat race and finished the Craftsman Club dash in 6th.

“I really thought I had him cleared and he got back by me,” Gravel said, referring to his battle with eventual race winner Rico Abreu. “I’m a little mad at myself for not winning this, it sucks to finish second. I am really happy for Drew [Warner] for him to get his first career Outlaw victory and for Rico.”

After finishing 2nd on the opening night, the #5 car timed in 12th quick, charged to 3rd in the heat race and began the 55-lap feature in 9th on the following night.

“Track work took a bit again but 55 laps is a long race,” Gravel explained. “We just didn’t quite have what we needed too in the second night. A top-10 was still good but we wanted more.”

The most exciting week of sprint car racing is now upon the CJB team as the head for the expansive Marion County Fairgrounds. This will home base for a week as the team contests the most prestigious sprint car race in the world, the 5-Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals at Knoxville Raceway. Last season, Gravel swept his qualifying night and earned the pole for the 50 lap, $150,000-to-win event. A freak part failure derailed a promising night and the team is back for redemption.

“We certainly felt like we left something on the table last year,” commented Gravel. “We had a really fast car and just had a freak part failure. It wasn’t anyone’s fault at all. It does stay with you, though. It has stayed with us all year long. We are bringing back a good piece and want to complete this thing. We fell that we can.”
