KNOXVILLE KNOCKOUT: Gravel Charges Forward to Impressive Run at Knoxville Nationals

August 14th, 2018

Second west coast swing of the season begins with a jaunt through the Dakotas

CARLISLE, PA. – August 13, 2018 – David Gravel and the CJB Motorsports team were looking to return to the 5-Hour Knoxville Nationals for redemption. Merely a season removed from one of the most dominating performances in the events history, Gravel and the team were looking to “close the deal” and return home as champions of the biggest sprint car race of the year.

The team competed on Thursday, August 9th during Toyota Qualifying night. Gravel timed in 29th quick, finished fourth in his heat race and charged from 13th to 3rd in the feature.

“Time trials are important everywhere, but they are super important at the Nationals,” Gravel.

“Since you’re basically accruing points each time you hit the track, it makes all the difference in the world. We didn’t post the lap we wanted now did we win our heat race. That put us in a big hole. Luckily, Barry (Jackson), Derek (Miller) & Zach (Holloway) put together a great setup for the feature and we finished 3rd. That somewhat salvaged our night but it was a letdown after last year’s performance.”

By virtue of points, Gravel lined up 7th in the B-feature for Saturday nights program. With only the top-4 cars heading into the $150,000-to-win feature, Gravel and the team knew they had their work cut out for them.

“We had to really be on our A-game for to make it into the show,” Gravel explained. “There was a lot of pressure but we made it. In the A, we had a good car and won the hard charger award. It’s a small consolation prize but it all goes back to where we timed in on Thursday night. It just took us a while and a lot of hard work to dig out of that hole.”

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series tour now heads west for the second time this year. Stops at River Cities Speedway near Grand Forks, N.D. and Red River Valley Speedway near Fargo, N.D. are on tap at the tour makes its way to the west coast.

“We love going up to North Dakota,” commented Gravel. “The race fans are awesome up there and those are two tracks that are really fun to run. We’ve had some success at both, particularly River Cities. We’ve still got some goals to accomplish this year and we want to make a run in the points. We’ve got enough time left to make some noise.”
