PENNSYLVANIA POWER TRIP: Gravel Delights Fans with Strong Finish at Lincoln Speedway

Williams Grove Speedway loses one night to rain; Outlaws finish out July in upstate New York

CARLISLE, PA. – July 23, 2018 – The CJB Motorsports team considers the central Pennsylvania tracks of Lincoln Speedway and Williams Grove Speedway as their ‘home turf.’ An unspoken added pressure can be felt when the #5 hauler pulls into the pits at these two facilities. Each July, the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series makes their way back through this area of the Keystone State and CJB Motorsports is more motivated than usual to grab a checkered flag.

This stretch began with the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup event at Lernerville Speedway near Sarver, Pa. Gravel timed in 14th, charged to 3rd in his heat race and started the 25,000-to-win feature in 10th.

“Timing in during time trials continues to be where we need to improve,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “From there, we had a solid night. Lernerville is one of my favorite tracks so I really enjoy getting to race there. We ended up 4th, which was pretty good.”

Forty-eight hours later, the team contested the tricky oval in Abbottsown, Pa. known as Lincoln Speedway. Gravel and the team were riding a wave of momentum after winning the event last season. The #5 machine timed in second, won his heat race and then the Craftsman Club dash.

“What a race that was,” explained Gravel. “We were really fast all night and that feature was just amazing. I didn’t need that yellow, but that’s racing. It’s a tough one to swallow, you lead that many laps, you want to win.”

The next evening saw the team and the series invade the historic Williams Grove Speedway near Mechanicsburg. The paperclip shaped half-mile holds a very special place in the heart of CJB crew chief Barry Jackson.

“We had to charge from mid-pack in the feature,” commented Gravel. “Starting 15th at the Grove is hard and luckily we got a top-10 out of it. It’s really stout competition anytime you go there.”

The show at the Grove was scheduled for two nights but Mother Nature dumped enough rain to force series and track officials to cancel the Saturday evening portion of the event.

Three stops in the state of New York will close out the month of July for the Outlaws. On Wednesday, July 25th, the tour stops at Airborne Park Speedway near Plattsburgh. Visits to Ransomville Speedway on Friday, July 27th and Weedsport Speedway on Sunday, July 29th complete the weekend.

“We’re kind of in that stretch push to Knoxville,” said Gravel, whom finished 5th at Ransomville last year. “We’re looking forward to these New York tracks those. They’ll be fun and will give us some opportunities for wins.”
