ELUSIVE ELDORA: Gravel and CJB Crew Turn in Stout Perfomance at “Big E”

Pennsylvania tracks up next for the ‘Greatest Show on Dirt’

CARLISLE, PA. – July 16, 2018 – The famed ‘Month of Money’ has begun for the

World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series. With big money on the line at seemingly every trip to the track, David Gravel and the CJB Motorsports team were ready for the lid lifter, which was the annual Ohio Logistics Brad Doty Classic at Attica (Ohio) Raceway Park on Tuesday, July 10th. Gravel timed in 7th before finish 3rd in his heat race and started the feature in 14th.

“We missed where we needed to be in time trials by one spot,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5.

“We struggled at the beginning and even slid back to 18th. Found a good line for our car and got the wing back and we made our way back up to 9th. We were very happy with that.”

The tour then moved across the state of Ohio to Eldora Speedway for three nights of racing action as apart of the 35th annual Kings Royal weekend. On the opening night, known as Jokers Wild, Gravel timed in 8th, finished 3rd in his heat race and rocketed from 8th to 1st in the evenings Craftsman Club Dash.

“We were fast all night,” explained Gravel. “We really made up ground in the dash.

Led some in the feature and got into lap traffic. We got squeezed a bit and wrecked. Got the car back together and finished the race but the frame was bent, among other things. We had to take down a whole new car for the rest of the weekend.”

The following night in the Knight Before the Royal, Gravel timed in 6th, finished 3rd in his heat race and started the feature in 18th.

“We missed where we needed to be by a spot in the heat race,” commented Gravel. “We just got buried in the field and had to make do with that. We finished 13th, which was disappointing.”

With the eyes of the collective sprint car world on the high-banked half mile oval, Gravel and company took to accomplishing a long-time team goal of winning one of sprint car racing’s crown jewel events. The night started well with Gravel timing in second overall out of 51 machines. A 3rd finish in his heat race saw the #5 machine start the 40-lap feature in the 14th position.

“We felt really good at the beginning of the night,” said Gravel. “We timed in 2nd overall. Had a good run in the heat race but, once again, we just didn’t finish high enough so we had to start deep in the field. There were no cautions and I feel like we needed that. We finished 8th and we were one of the fastest cars on the track at the end.”

A 48-hour breather is in order before the series returns to action at the Lernerville Speedway near Sarver, Pa. for the Don Martin Memorial Silver Cup. Gravel and the team won the prestigious event in 2016. From there, it’s onto Lincoln (Pa.) Speedway and Williams Grove Speedway near Mechanicsburg, Pa.

“Lernerville is one of my favorite places to go,” said Gravel. “We want to win another Silver Cup, for sure. Lincoln is a place where I struggled but we did win there last year. Looking forward to it. Williams Grove is another strong place for us.”
