JUNE CLOSER: Brownells Big Guns Bash at Knoxville Raceway to Close Out June

June 27th, 2018

CJB Motorsports and World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series races on with heavy hearts

CARLISLE, PA. – June 26, 2018 – Mother Nature continues to be a thorn in the side of racers everywhere. Heavy rains and saturated grounds forced the cancelation of the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series return to Farley (Iowa) Speedway on Friday, June 22nd.

David Gravel and the CJB Motorsports team were ready for action as the series moved onto Wisconsin the following night for an event at Beaver Dam Raceway. Gravel timed in 7th quick, finished second in his heat race and notched a fourth-place finish in the Craftsman Club Dash.

“We qualified out of the top-six,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “Made the dash from our heat race and was fast in that. Made up a few spots in the feature when we developed a hole in the tire. It eventually came apart and torn up the side board and such. Had to come in, get it changed, make some repairs and we got back out there and finished 12th.”

The tour now closes out the month of June with a return trip to Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway for the Brownells Big Guns Bash on Friday, June 29th and Saturday, June 30th. The last time Gravel and the team were at the famous half-mile, was the 2017 5 Hour Energy Knoxville Nationals where a mechanical failure kept them from winning sprint car racings biggest event.

“Some things have changed around,” explained Gravel. “Perhaps something in the tires or what not. We’re going there with the same setup we had as last summer to see if we still have as good of handle on the track as we did last August. Looking forward to getting some track time, for sure, and seeing if we can pick up where we left off.”

Unfortunately, in an accident at Beaver Dam, fellow competitor Jason Johnson lost his life. Everyone at CJB Motorsports sends our heartfelt condolences and prayers to the entire Johnson family and Jason Johnson Racing. Out of respect for the Johnson family, series officials opted to delay the Outlaws return to Jacksonville (Illi.) Speedway from Wednesday, June 27th to Friday, October 12th.

“Jason was a heckuva guy,” commented Gravel. “His love for his son, Jaxx, was what stood out to me the most. Jason made a little basketball court for Jaxx and we played recently at Jackson (Motorplex.) Jason was even out there shooting hoops with fans. That just tells you what kind of guy he was. I really admired how he didn’t come from a whole lot, but he built this Outlaw caliber team. It was extremely impressive. He was always very determined and had very high expectations. I feel really bad for Bobbi (Jason’s wife) and Jaxx. Hopefully this will open the door for major safety improvements in our sport. It would be in his honor and he paid that price. He will be missed by all of us.”
