5’s IN VEGAS: Car #5 Nets Two Top-5 Finishes at Las Vegas Motorspeedway

March 7th, 2018

Event at Perris Auto Speedway cancelled due to rain; Outlaws due to return at Thunderbowl

CARLISLE, PA. – March 7, 2018 – Typically, a row of 7’s on a slot machine will yield a large pay day in Las Vegas. For David Gravel and the CJB Motorsports team, the lucky number of the two day show was five.

The driver of car #5 scored two top-5 finishes as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series invaded the half-mile oval at the Las Vegas Motorspeedway. On night number one, Gravel timed in 10th quick in the second flight of qualifiers, and finished 4th in his heat race and started the feature in 16th.

“Qualifying is what set us back each night,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “We only gained one spot in our heat race so we had to start deep in the field. Luckily for us, there were plenty of restarts so we were able to pick our way through a bit. I felt like we had a third place car and we ended up fifth. We were pretty happy to salvage a top-5.”

The team returned the following night for another crack at the semi banked oval. Car #5 timed in 12th quick in the second flight, finished 3rd in the heat race and lined up 12th for the feature.

“We switched engines before heading back to the track for the second night,” said Gravel. “We felt like the new engine would qualify better than the one we’ve had in there. We lost the new engine during hot laps and had to thrash to get the old engine back in for time trials. We ran into the same thing and qualified deep but we made up some spots in the heat race which helped a lot.

Ran third and that’s about what I think we should’ve ran. Two top-5’s after qualifying that deep in the field was a very good turn of events.”

The Outlaws scheduled event at Perris Auto Speedway on Saturday, March 3rd was cancelled due to weather and soaked grounds.

The series now turns it’s attention to the Thunderbowl Raceway near Tulare, Calif. on Friday, March 9th and Saturday March 10th. Gravel has won an event at the California bullring in each of the past two years.

“That track just really suits me,” explained Gravel. “I’ve had a lot of success – a lot of podiums – since I have been going out there and we translated that into wins once I came over to CJB. It’s a track where you have to be very aggressive and attack the track. You can’t just ride around there. I don’t think there is a ton of pressure to make if three years in a row. I know we’ll have a good car and we’ll give it our all and hopefully that results in another win.”
