KNOCKIN’ THE RUST OFF: Gravel & CJB Get Into the Swing of Things at Volusia

February 13th, 2018

Four top 10’s in five nights has the Pennsylvania based team looking forward to going west

CARLISLE, PA. – February 13, 2018 –  One of the most grueling racing seasons in all of motorsports begins each year in the state of Florida.

The World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series kicked off it’s 2018 campaign at the Volusia Speedway Park near Barberville, Fl. David Gravel and the CJB Motorsports team arrived a few days early in order to contest two nights of action with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions presented by Mobil One. On the first night, which was completed on Wednesday, February 7th, Gravel won his heat race, finished 5th in the dash and marched from 10th to 3rd in the feature.

The following night, the #5 machine finished 2nd in the heat race and fifth in the dash once again. For the feature, Gravel charged from 9th to 4th.

“Good car on a good night for us to get our bearings back,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “A podium finish is a great way to begin the year. The second night was very similar to that and we felt good that we drove forward. We just needed to get qualified better.”

The following three nights of racing action represented the season lid lifter for the ‘Greatest Show on Dirt.’ Gravel’s night was going well until a viscous accident knocked the #5 machine out of competition for the evening.

“That was a tough, tough wreck,” Gravel explained. “The car protected me and I was pretty sore but I walked away and that is what I am the most grateful for. I really want to thank Barry (Jackson) for the cars he builds and the way he and the crew takes care of things.”

The CJB team retooled and returned the following night and timed in 10th before finishing fifth in their heat race. In the feature, the #5 car sped to a top-5 finish after starting 18th.

“We had to make up a huge chunk of ground again so the car raced really well in the feature,” said Gravel. “It’s a testament to what Barry, Derek (Miller) and Zach (Holloway) give me each night. We just never give up.”

The final night of action at Volusia took place on Sunday, February 11th. Gravel and the CJB team returned for action and rolled off in the 18th starting position for the second night in a row.

“We grabbed 9th so we ended the week with a top-10,” said Gravel. “Outside of the night we wrecked, we had a top-5, top-10 car. We’re very happy with our speed.”

The tour now takes a weekend off before returning to action at the Cotton Bowl Speedway near Paige, Texas on Friday, February 23rd. The following night, the Outlaws make their way to Lonestar Speedway near Kilgore, Texas.

“Cotton Bowl is a great track” said Gravel, who finished third there in 2016. “Lonestar is another cool track so it’ll be a good weekend of racing.”
