CLEMENTINE CLOSER: Gravel Ends Victory Run for Schatz at Minot

CJB Closes Out the Month of August with Stops in South Dakota and Montana

CARLISLE, PA. – August 22, 2017 –  The sting of a Knoxville Nationals defeat didn’t hang out too long with David Gravel and the CJB Motorsports team. Though disappointed their run at sprint car racings biggest prize came up short, the Chad & Jenn Clemens owned team knew there was still plenty of victories to be captured as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series headed west for the second time in 2017.

Up first was the second of two stops at River Cities Speedway near Grand Forks, N.D. Gravel timed in 6th in the first flight of time trial cars. A fourth place finished netted the CJB team a 15th place starting position in the nights feature event.

“We wanted to time in better for sure,” explained Gravel. “You really make up ground in the heats and dash. We had to start a ways back and there just wasn’t much ground to be gained.”

The following night saw the team have an uncharacteristic night. Red River Valley Speedway near West Fargo, N.D. made up its’ postponed event on Saturday, August 19th. Gravel timed in 20th, finished seventh in his heat race and had to come through the Last Chance Showdown to make the feature.

“Just another bad start to the night,” said Gravel, driver of the GoMUDDY.com, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “We had to come through the ‘B’ and make up what ground we could. It was still just a rough, rough night. “

With one race left at Nodak Speedway near Minot on Sunday, August 20th, crew chief Barry Jackson decided to prepare a new car racing action. The car, which carries the nickname of “Clementine” due to it’s bright orange color, has been very good to the CJB crew. The change was evident immediately as Gravel qualified fourth before finishing second in his heat race and winning the Craftsman Club dash.
“To beat Donny (Schatz) there was big,” said Gravel, who now has his 13th Outlaw win of the season. “Donny had won here an awful lot. I think five in a row. We just had a really good night and they watered the track a lot. That made the track really fast for the feature. It was a fun race and we were glad to win it.”

Gravel and company will close out the month of August with stops at Black Hills Speedway near Rapid City, S.D. on Friday, August 25th and BMP Speedway in Billings, Mont. on Saturday, August 26th.
“It’ll be the first trip for me for both tracks,” commented Gravel. “It’s fun to go to new places. We’ll do what we always do; try to compare the track to some place that we know really well and, hopefully, we’ll unload with a fast race car and be really close to where we need to be to win.”
