KNOXVILLE KNOCKOUT: Gravel & Swindell Charge to Strong Finishes at Knoxville

August 17th, 2016
Gravel heads west for second time while Swindell heads east to for duel
CARLISLE, PA. – August 15, 2016 –  There is no race a sprint car driver wants to win more than the 5 Hour ENERGY Knoxville Nationals. It only comes around once a year. And each time you race in the four day extravaganza, you learn something new.
For CJB Motorsports drivers David Gravel and Sammy Swindell, the duo set out to deliver the organization their first National trophy on Saturday, August 13th. The drivers lined up for the 50 lap event around the Knoxville (Iowa) Raceway in the 11th and 12th positions.
“Our car felt pretty good,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “The first twenty-five laps, we struggled with the fuel load on the car. It wasn’t until the end of the first segment that we really got to going good. The second twenty-five laps went by really quickly. Once again, the fuel load effected the car and we got to going pretty good at the end of the second segment as well. Tenth is a personal best for me at the Nationals. You want to win it but we’ll take a top-10.”
“The track changes a lot during the course of the week and even that night,” said Swindell, the pilot of the Big Game Treestands, GoMuddy.com #1. “We were in traffic all night so it was hard to get a firm grasp on the car. It got to be a bit exciting for awhile. During the first 25 laps, we were a little loose. During the big stop, we changed the stagger, the left rear shock and the tires. Whereas the car was down to far on the left, we were too rolled up for the second 25 laps. We’re not really happy about it.”
With sprint car racings biggest event in the rearview mirror, Gravel and the #5 team will now embark on the second west coast swing of the season. Up first is a stop at McCool Junction, Neb. and the Junction Motor Speedway on Tuesday, August 16th. The ‘Greatest Show on Dirt’ will also make a stop at Angell Park Speedway on Sunday, August 21st.
“We’ve been on a great run as of late,” said Gravel. “We hope to continue that on into McCool Junction and into Angell Park. I know Angell Park is more of a midget track and I have seen quite a few midget races there. I am sure we’ll put on a good show there and am looking forward to it.”
Swindell and the #1 team will head for the east coast with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions for stops at Grandview Speedway in Bechtelsville, Pa. on Thursday, August 18th and Lebanon Valley Speedway in West Lebanon, N.Y. on Sunday, August 21st.
“It’s been awhile since I have been to Grandview,” said Swindell. “It’s a tricky place. It changes throughout the night a lot. We just need to get our car to work and we’ll be alright. Lebanon Valley is a very fast track and its very technical track. It’s one of the few places I can actually draft at. It’s hard to pass there and you gotta stay on your toes. The driver can do a lot there and I like that.”
