CEDAR LAKE CHARGER: Gravel Powers CJB #5 To The Front at Cedar Lake Speedway

July 14th, 2016
Kings Royal weekend on tap as Gravel and Swindell Look to Bring Home $50,000 for CJB
CARLISLE, PA. – July 13, 2016 –  Few tracks on the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series schedule can ignite team owner Chad Clemens passion quite like Eldora Speedway near Rossburg, Ohio.
The fire doesn’t stop at the team owner, however. The entire team looks forward to the day when they will get to stand in victory lane at the famous half mile.
With the recent momentum that both the #5 & #1 teams have gained, that dream of victory at the “Big E,” may soon become a reality.
David Gravel and the #5 team looked to continue their streak of top-5 finishes as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series took on Cedar Lake Speedway near New Richmond, Wis. on Friday, July 8th and Saturday, July 9th.
Gravel timed in 19th of 34 cars on the weekend lid lifter. He had his work cut out for him.
“Timing in is just very crucial every where you go,” said Gravel, pilot of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5. “We had to get ourselves out of the hole and we rebounded pretty good. Our car was good for the feature and we went forward and got a top-10.”
The following night, Gravel was back again but timed in fourth, finished second in his heat race and finished third in the dash.
“We qualified well so we put ourselves in a lot better position,” commented Gravel, who notched his 30th overall top-5 of the season. “I think I finished second here three times so Cedar Lake has been pretty good to me. Donny was really good – I think we needed lapped traffic. We’ll take second. We’ve had a lot of podium finishes. Hopefully we can get some wins here.”

The series left the Upper Midwest for a return trip to Ohio. The annual Brad Doty Classic is a favorite among drivers and teams alike.  The namesake and co-promoter, Brad Doty, is friends with pretty much anyone he meets. The race shifted back to Attica (OH) Raceway Park after a long (and successful) run at Limalnd (OH) Motorsports Park. The Watertown, Conn. native was ready for the challenge having competed at the track for years with the Arctic Cat All Star Circuit of Champions.
“Anytime you go to Attica, you know you are in for a fight,” said Gravel. “The car counts are always huge there and this was no different. We qualified 19th in group two for time trials. Then we missed the cut off in our heat race by finishing 7th. We just got behind early and that was the mistake. Ended up in the C-main and finished fifth and that’s where our night ended. It was very disappointing.”
All eyes now turn to the Eldora Speedway and the 33rd running of the $50,000-to-win Kings Royal. The action gets started on Thursday night with “Jokers Wild,” a $10,000-to-win affair. The following night,  $12,000 will be on the line in the “Knight Before the Kings Royal.” Gravel knows what a win at the high-banked half-mile would mean for his team. Both Gravel and Swindell will be in action.
“The Kings Royal is one of the crown jewels of our sport,” said Gravel, who has one Eldora win with the Outlaws. “You definitely want to win it for you team, your owners, your sponsors and so forth. I feel like, with the way we’ve been running, that we’ll be pretty stout. Having a three night show will be great also.”
