GOLDEN STATE WRAP UP: Gravel Looks to Close West Coast Tour with Wins

Rain cancels events at Calistoga Speedway; Swindell to Tackle Knoxville Opener
CARLISLE, PA. – April 13, 2016 – Mother nature proved to be an enemy of sprint car racing as the World of Outlaws Craftsman Sprint Car Series was rained out on Friday, April 8th and Saturday, April 9th. The series was set to take the Calistoga Speedway in the picturesque wine country on Northern California but saturated grounds canceled any plans for racing.
“It was disappointing that we didn’t even get one night in at Calistoga,” said Gravel of his performance at Ocean Speedway, which was also his debut there. “We were really looking forward to seeing what we had there.”
Gravel, driver of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5, now sets his sights on the final three races of the Outlaws first west coast swing of the year. The inaugural stop at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway on Friday, April 15th kicks off the run to the end that includes stops at Perris (Calif.) Auto Speedway and USA Raceway in Tucson, Ariz.
“Anytime we visit a track for the first time, we are excited. Bakersfield is no different,” said Gravel. “We’re on even footing then. I really like Perris because of the speed. Barry and the team also won there last year so I know we’ll be set up good. I scored a top-10 there last year. I also got a top-10 at USA Raceway so we’ve got some good tracks coming up. Hopefully we can get some wins to close out the tour.
Sammy Swindell and his #1 team were due to take on the National Sprint League season opener at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa. Once again, Mother nature notched the victory. Swindell and the team will now head to neighboring Knoxville Raceway for the 63rd Pella Motors season opener on Saturday, April 16th.
“It’ll be great to be up at Knoxville for their opener,” said Swindell. “We’re looking forward to getting some laps around there so that we’re good to go for the Nationals later this year. I’m also looking forward to seeing some friends while we’re up there.”
