Placerville Speedway leads into Easter weekend break for ‘Greatest Show on Dirt’
CARLISLE, PA. – March 23, 2016 – Fresh off of a very strong run at Thunderbowl Raceway in Tulare, Calif., the CJB Motorsports duo of David Gravel & Sammy Swindell continued their California tour with a weekend doubleheader at Stockton (Calif.) Dirt Track. Both drivers were seeking their first victories at the track that proved to challenge them both.
On the first night, Gravel, driver of the Big Game Treestands, J.R.C. Transportation Inc., C&S Lawn & Landscape #5, timed in 10th quick, maintained a third place position in his heat race and started the 30-lap feature in 10th.
“We had a good car on the opening night,” said Gravel, who has an average finish of 2.76 in 14 heat races this season. “Qualifying was key as always. Timing in 10th really set our night off well. We just kept making small small adjustments and got better and better. It was a solid night.”
The following night, Gravel timed in 14th quick, moved from 5th to 4th in his heat race and charged his way into the top-10.
“On Saturday night, it really seemed like where you were at was where you finished,” said Gravel. “What I mean by that is that we started mid-pack and that’s where we stayed. I think if we had started closer to the front, we would’ve stayed there. We were lucky enough to make a few spots up in the feature and grab a top-10.”
Sliding over into the #1 CJB Motorsports pit area paints a similar story for the weekend.
Veteran driver Sammy Swindell timed in 5th quick on the opening night at the Stockton Dirt Track. The three-time Outlaw champion grabbed a victory in his heat race, made the dash and started the feature event in the 8th position.
“We’re still struggling a bit when the track loses grip,” said Swindell, driver of the #1 Big Game Treestands, GoMuddy.com. “We learned some things both nights. There were somethings I liked that we had changed and others I didn’t. There wasn’t much opportunity to pass so we did the best we could. Making that dash is really important. We raced well the rest of the night.”
The following night, Swindell had a much steeper hill to climb as a 26th place result in time trials left the #1 machine fighting for every spot in the heat race.
“We tried a few different things from the first night,”said Swindell, who has an average A-main finish of 10.8 in 2016. “I kind screwed up in time trials and got up too high and that cost us in time trials. A few tenths really does matter, especially against the Outlaws where there are so many good cars. In the heat race, we charged forward really well. In the feature, we probably passed 20 cars but it doesn’t look like we moved up much because there was a lot of back and forth racing.”
A Wednesday night stop at Placerville (Calif.) Speedway is all that stands betweens the Outlaws and a much deserved weekend of rest for Easter. The series return to the track last season after a 20+ year absence. Gravel scored a 4th place finish in last years event. Swindell, a two-time winner at the facility with victories coming in 1986 & 1987, will be heading home from the west coast. The Tennessee veteran will be in action next on April 9th at 34 Raceway in Burlington, Iowa.
“Placerville is a cool little track that’s set down in a bowl,” said Gravel. “I had a pretty good run there last year so I am looking forward to going there again and improving on that.”
“We had a good run out west,” said Swindell. “Logistically, it kind of worked out for my hauler to head back home after this race to get us ready for the rest of the season. It’ll be nice to have some time off and get regrouped for the rest of the year.”
